Welcome To Holy Apostles

To unite all in Christ through Word, Sacrament, and Service to Parish and Community. We are an ecumenical community chartered and supported by the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond. Take some time to learn how Holy Apostles came into being following an after dinner conversation between Bishop Walter F. Sullivan of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond and his friend, Bishop David S. Rose of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia in 1977.

About Us

We are an intimate and close knit family who welcome like minded individuals to join us. While we pursue our unique ministry of ecumenism, we are ever-mindful, and observant of our respective traditions. Due to current constraints, we hold two services weekly with most families attending both. There is a nursery and Children's Liturgy to cater to younger members. We are grateful for the richness of our respective faith traditions and welcome Christians of all denominations to celebrate in Christ with us.

Our 40th Anniversary

Thirteen original members of the Church of the Holy Apostles, the diocese’s only Episcopal/Roman Catholic ecumenical community, joined with about 150 other guests on Sunday, November 5, 2017 in the celebration of its 40th Anniversary.  Past Episcopal and Roman Catholic clergy joined with Father Alan Mead (the Episcopal interim Co-pastor) and Father René Castillo (the community’s Catholic Chaplain) for a two-hour reception followed by Evening Prayer, much of which was chanted.  Bishop Herman “Holly” Hollerith, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, was in attendance and delivered the reflection following the service’s scripture reading.  Bishop Hollerith then asked the attendees to re-dedicate themselves to promoting ecumenism “… (and) to spread the Good News of our life in Jesus Christ who calls us to oneness.”
On prominent display was the Papal Blessing bestowed upon the community by Pope Francis in recognition of the assembly’s 40th Anniversary.  Also displayed was well wishes from Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate for the Episcopal Church of the United States.
Original members (left to right): Edith Byrnes, Bill Byrnes, Bonnie Startt, Lee Startt, Joe Byrnes, Jack Sirrine, Jean Koch, Pete Koch, Joan Flowers, Karen Royall, Mike Cherwa, Annette Cherwa, and Jean Pruitt
